I need to start blogging again

I havn't blogged since this summer in India, but it's time to get back in the swing of it. Who knows maybe it will inspire some ideas for my advertising campaigns. Let's hope so.

Preparation Video

For Intro To Creativity (the reason I started this blog) we had a group assignment: To make a movie about "Preparation"- the first part of the creative process.Graham Wallas, social psychologist and educator gave humanity  The Four-Stage Process Model of Creativity:
1. Preparation 2. Incubation 3. Illumination 4. Verification.

TATE lecture- Diane Keaton

Was it worth taking a precious hour and a half away from finals studying to see Diane Keaton? YES. When I wasn't laughing I was trying to hold back tears. After a scene from "First Wives Club" Ms. Keaeton playfully poked herself in front of the projector. Clad in (you guessed it) a turtle neck, black hat,  full polka dot skirt, and Christian Louboutin booties she was uninhibited. If I walked out of the house in her outfit, my mother would have called me a "ragga-muffin"... but interestingly enough Diane shared how her mother would let her design her own outfits and then she would make them for her. Her high school graduation outfit wasn't far off from what she was wearing last night, she said hats accentuate her smile :)

Ms. Keaton captivated the audience with stories of "growing old" and holding onto memories. She addressed her fear of intimacy, funny stories of on screen kisses, and how she would unpredictably stumble upon romantic (or not so romantic) moments she shared with famous actors like Jack Nicholson and Woody Allen. However, she didn't talk too much about HollyWood, which was a relief.

Anyone could relate to her lecture because she honed in on the big moments that moved her. They weren't in the movies, but in her house. She showed clips of her mother during alzheimers and her two precious kids doing day to day funny stuff. Her mother was truly the inspiration behind recording these "memories". She would put her hands up symbolizing a picture and go "Click" when a big moment came up. "A memory is when your heart takes a picture"

Diane also addressed how "youth" is not beauty, and she believes the reason she was chosen to be a spokesperson for Loreal is because of her "vitality". Ms. Keaton also said, "Perfection is the death of creativity, and creativity is the cornerstone of a good idea". WOW. She blew me away! Her mom had around 100 diaries when she died, which really inspired me to keep writing. I've been journaling since I was in second grade and blogging become my new journaling. I thought of asking Ms. Keaton a question (of course it came to me after the lecture was over)...Does it matter what medium you use record the pictures your heart takes?  Does painting or scrap booking, or writing in a journal have more to grapple with than a BLOG?

To answer my own question, I think the tangible mediums do offer more. A blog is where an idea starts and the journal, or painting, or scrapbook can be more of a final draft. Ms. Keaton taught me how to hold onto these memories, because from time to time you will want to look back and remember.

Who thinks family guy is better than South Park? I DO!!! You're not pop culture if you have not landed on one of these cartoon sitcoms. I think it's hilarious how Stewie & Co. sing about the FCC (Federal Communications Commission). We learned about the FCC in my ethics class and this Family Guy interpretation of the FCC as a "bad guy" made me laugh. However, the FCC is not a bad guy! It helps regulate inappropriate stereotypes and draws the line somewhere. Family Guy gets away with a lot of subliminal humor, and if it's really too inappropriate the FCC will take care of it!

Business Cards

I had this overwhelming pile of business cards in my desk drawer, but I never really looked at them. I decided to group them into piles by contact category:

1. SMU
2. Buds (advertisers/marketers/entrepreneurs around my age)
3. Art
4. BBQ (I sell BBQ sauce)  The Secret Sauce
5. Sponsors
6. Personal
7. Finance & Development
8. Misc.

All Organized.

I suppose the next step is to put the contact info into my gmail account. I'll save that for another day.

My current business card... I want to make a hybrid one- half BBQ sales rep/ half Artist.

airflights

Aaron Koblin has a fine arts and computer science degree. He uses flight technology patterns to create video and still art. I think it's be tight to have this video or the one below this on a screen in my house and display it as ART.

This one is ridiculous (wish it had music though)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ystkKXzt9Wk

Look at his Site!

http://www.aaronkoblin.com/work/flightpatterns/

Now compare this one to the first ones. This last one is interesting...but not as "artistically" enhanced as Aaron's.

UNION, Class Giving

If you saw the cutouts (like Lindsey Perry's above) on campus
a few thursdays ago at SMU, you were witnessing the school
wide Giving Competition. Union members set up around
campus stationed at different schools. I was at Meadows
with Ms. Mackenzie the news anchor and Mr. Sam Todd
who was representing Study abroad. Each senior Union
member  gets a cutout that  states a blurb :
"When I'm not_______ I'm giving to the Union".
I've already thought about  my cutout for next year I'm
debating between two. 1) When I'm not playing indoor
soccer at Dedman, I'm giving to the Union". OR "If I'm
not organizing luncheons for the Scholars Luncheon I'm
giving to the Union".

The purpose of the Union is to increase awareness of
"giving back" among undergrads. SMU is trying to
improve our overall rankings of how much alumni
like their school. The way University's are ranked
depends on the percent of alumni who give back
(not necessarily how much they give, but the fact
that they do give!) If we get students in the habit of
giving while they are undergrads, they are more likely
to do it when they are alumni. We've had a 274% increase
in 4 years (which is unreal!) See Chip's email below to find
out more details.

P.S. I designed the  stickers :)

Styrofoam Cups...

I can't wait to live in my own apartment next year because I not only get to re-arrange furniture, but also I  get to put MY paintings up on the walls. I get to pick out vintage table clothes and estate sale tables and mix them all up with my Pollock bean bag and other nonsense! I'm sure my mother is worried because my taste is a little...nontraditional. No worries mom, you don't have to live there!

On the left we have a solo cup. On the right we have Nate (an SMU ceramic "special" student's) original artwork.

I purchased 12 of Nate's cups because they are the perfect size and also fun to rearrange and display as sculptures.

Why not?

Beer Pong anyone? Don't be silly these are PORCELAIN! However, dishwasher and microwave friendly.

I'm not gonna lie... I am a super swift cup stacker.

Creative Ideas via Sleep

Why am I getting all of these nightmares!? Do I need to lighten the reading before bedtime? Teddy Roosevelt's River of Doubt must be getting to me...The Indian attacks and crewmen killing each other off is apparently too much for my brain to handle before I hit the pillow. I had 4 different scary episodes in my dream last night:

1. Bruce (fake name someone I've known for a long time...but somethings off about him) kidnapped me by a creek we live by in Kansas City. Details are blurry... but I do remember a white van and escaping back to my house.
 poem I made from dream:
Bruised Bruce steering curves, screeching breaks, yet nothing heard.

2. I found myself on top of my cousins roof. They had repaired the roof with shingles packed tight in zip lock baggies (what!?). It was my duty to hammer the "shingles" down. Though the zip lock baggy part was weird, I can relate to the roofing. I've worked on Habitat for Humanity at SMU, and roofing is always my favorite part! Maybe my dreams are trying to tell me to volunteer more?
poem I made from dream:

Clickity clack on the rooftop I spat, straddled upside down -a flaying bat. Hammering plastic-- my wings--collapsed.

3. I watched myself or either my daughter (no I do not have a daughter in real life) get kidnapped by two older men. The men were well groomed, one had white hair, and the other was younger and more Italian mafia looking. They got in a car, and ordered me to get in. I miraculously had a pair of scissors and cut the saggy skin between one of the guys index and thumb. This was excrutiating, but not enough for them to stop chasing me. I ran away and climbed a black skyscrappers/rockwall. They weren't that swift at climbing, but they eventually caught up... then I woke up.
poem I made from dream:
Dusty fairies of familiar ties, colorful, wonderful, yet shy. Couldn't undo what I had to pry.

4. This part was closer to a columbine event. I was inside and could see machine guns firing through the wall. I had the instinct to run. I arrived at a huge gymnasium like room with neon colors (almost looked like a paint ball arena). Here I tried to hide under sheets on a trampoline, but I knew the killers would be able to see my shape. Time was running out, but I decided to go climb again, I was pretty sure they were in the room now... fortunately I woke up.
poem I made from dream:
Flipping and foam in this condescending dome. A tent I made- pinching for a spade.

Who knew sleep could be creatively productive?

Africa Exhibit-AIDS

A couple of weeks ago there was this LARGE tent set up by the flagpole on campus. I was curious so I ventured in. They said it would only take 15 minutes...

It was a rough 15. A blow to the heart. I walked into Africa and experienced Kombo's life. The life of a 5-yr-old boy who's mother is dying of aids is not a pretty sight. Luckily, he has his grandmother to take care of him. But still, she owns a truck stop and prostitutes set up there daily. Imagine being around prostitutes at such a young age (well any age really)...

He is scared of the big trucks or the "big disease" -Aids.

Kombo's Trailer  worldvisionexperience.org

The World Vision was an impactful way to learn about aids because they literally set up a village inside the tent. A headset witha  voiceover of Kombo guides you through his life. It didn't feel like storytime...it felt real. There was dust on the ground, pictures on the wall...you felt like you were there...all that was missing was Kombo and the people themselves.

<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3

In 8th grade The Coterie Theatre did a presentation on Aids awareness. I was an advocate for the program because my mom sits on the Coterie Board. Professional actors came and acted out a scenes as if they had aids. I remember some kids were crying and the discussion lasted a good 20 minutes. We signed a pledge card saying we would stay abstinent until marriage to lessen our chance of aids.

The audience definitely needs to be high school for this program because it is more mature. However, The World Vision experience could reach ages as young as kindergarten. Why not get kids aware of aids? Creatives should think about how we can impact social causes through advertising (cause advertising). It's so easy to start a viral video to make people aware...otherwise the Aids virus will take over.

AIDS PROJECT

THE DRAMATIC AIDS EDUCATION PROJECT (DAEP)

A free touring prevention presentation for 8th grade and high schools
Available year-round, serving 8,000 annually.
An award winning collaborative program between the Coterie, University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Medicine and the University of Kansas Medical Center to educate teens about the transmission and prevention of HIV/AIDS.  Professional actors and medical, pharmacy and nursing students, trained as AIDS peer educators, employ hard hitting monologues, slides and music to present stories of HIV+ teenagers in the Kansas City area. Followed by an intensive question and answer period which can also include STD information, the award winning program is highly lauded for its balanced message.

Turtle/Tomaaz dream

Remember the part in "Finding Nemo" where the heard of turtles are swimming in the current?

My dream started off in a current like this.. and took me to a lake dock. I sat in the boat and chatted with Tomaasz, my polish bbball broski.

Furthermore, the dream reminded me of the whirlpool commercial:

Best Burger in Town

Some argue Twisted Root Burger Co, The Grape, Burger House or even Village Burger Bar are qualifiers for  "the best burger in town". They are all wrong. Keller's is hands down the BEST burger in Dallas. I would recommend the NO. 5- it comes with special sauce, pickles, onions, tomatoes, lettuce, cheese, two beef patties and a POPPYSEED seed bun ( this is no BIG MAC). The Bun is toasted to perfection and the rest of the burger just melts in your mouth. I salivate thinking about this sucker. It's not dry, it's not mushy, and  it's not too big. It's just scrumptious and it goes down well with a coke and extra crispy fries.

I've been going to Keller's since I was a little girl. My rents won't make a trip to Dallas without going to Keller's on a Saturday morning. .  My dad's fraternity brother, Jack Keller's family started the place. I don't think they've done a drop of decorating since it was opened and I hope they never do. The tin roofs and tattered signs suit the drive-in just fine. What other drive-in do you know of that serves BEER? Is that even legal

They also own Jake's Burgers, which is good, but still not the same as a Kellers burger.

Shower Lufas

He says (Ernie from Sesame Street) that rubber duckys makes bath time more fun. I'll have to admit... I don't remember having a rubber ducky when I was a tyke.  I was at World Market buying a chair cushion when I stumbled across some rather unusual shower lufas. There was a dinosaur, a turtle, and a yellow ducky. Before college, shower lufas were picked out for me. Mom usually picked the pink and purple ones...but I never had animal lufas! I didn't really need a new lufa...but maybe it would make bath time more fun. I contemplated (I do like taradactyls they make me laugh)...but there's just something about that rubber ducky that I want to try out. In retrospect, it did brighten shower time a little more :). After a couple of months, ducky became sad looking. It needed a replacement. I didn't make the haul to World Market, CVS was just so convenient. Unfortunately they didn't have animals, but they did have a nice flower blossom lufa. It was the same price as the regular lufas, why not!? From now on I don't think I will buy regular lufas when there are other, much more fun, alternatives. I wonder if I would have bought the dinosaur lufa if Sesame Street advertised "rubber dino's" in their song? It's crazy how Pop Culture really does effect our everyday choices. If I were making an ad for a new shower lufa (say the flower blossom) I would incorporate a tune with Ernie, or do a spin on the copy (if its not copyrighted) "_______ lufas make bath time more fun!"

Feed the Birds

This was not your typical "Cabo Wabo" Spring Break. We were on a boat, and we got close with nature. We learned a lot...like how birds love us and hated the hose.

India's Michael Jackson

I REALLY want to go to India this summer so I can meet Prabhu Deva and then he can show me around BOLLYWOOD (Sp?)...OH and to
study lots of advertising...who am I kidding? It'll be NUTS traveling around that place. Fast
Food Indian!!! SIGN ME UP!

But back to the clip...I think this could definitely be used as an ad if it was selling rain jackets (see part where he FLIPS his hood up backwards,it's insane and I strive to do that every day. Not really, but next time I wear a hooded jacket- that's on the list of things to do. This MUSIC
VIDEO reminds me of THRILLER because it's focused on the main guy and he can dances his pants (or HOOD) off!

The background dancers only enhance the visuals and add quite a bit of HUMOR. I think this could be a hit in the states, especially if you're
targeting an Indian culture/subculture. I'm American and I think it's great, and I think it would entertain a diverse range of folks. I could
definitely see pre-teens and teenagers digging this. The first time I saw it was in high school and by now I know almost all of the lyrics (even
though I have NO idea what they are saying).

The WORDS don't MATTER in this video, because the SOUNDS and VISUALS pull you in.

*~:LEMONADE:~*

If you've put on a lemonade stand, you've worked for yourself. You and your partner (who was most likely in pigtails) know what hard work is, and especially if you ran your business in the summer. With sweaty palms you poured the extra sugary pink lemonade for your drive-by customers. A couple quarters and you were RICH! This could buy you a couple laffy taffys at the pharmacy! A dollar, and you were a millionaire.

The documentary 'Lemonade' made me realize I want to eventually work for myself and hire my own peoples. The freedom that comes with being your own boss is attractive to me because you can multitask and be very productive with your time. In a way I already work for myself with my art business. I have my own business card, my own prices, my own studio, and my own clients. I don't have to ask my boss, "hey when is this due?"  Because I already know when the client wants their watercolor house painting and how they want their flowers to be in full boom (even if I took the picture in the dead of winter).

My dad works for himself and works out of the home. It was nice growing up and always having him around. I remember when I was reallly little when he was working for Hallmark and I'd have to wait till 6:30 or 7:00 before he walked in the door, "DADDY'S HOME!" It always seemed so late just an hour before my bedtime. But in middle school it made a world of a difference when I'd come home and be able to pop by his office.

I want that for my kids. I want little toddlers running around messing up my paints and giving me ideas for ads. I want to have my office in my home, maybe make it a west wing of the house or something... I'd not only hire copywriters and production peeps, but BABYSITTERS! Every day at work we'd have "recess" with the kids who would feed us ideas...when the bell rang, we'd go back to "real work" which would be just as much fun as playtime...that's my dream.

Truth in Motion

A">
Is the movie preview advertising because it's selling the movie? I was convinced by the trailer to watch because it's always fun to hear the athlete's story. Especially in an extreme and dangerous sport like sking, you can't help but want to see the behind the scenes crashes.

Do advertisers work on movie trailers? Or is that the movie crew...I suppose they can be interchangable. What I'm really curious about is how the camera follows the skier so closely...are they skiing also? Or on a snow mobile?

Recently I've been having trouble getting to sleep at night so I watch short documentaries on HULU. This one is a top pick because there is some sick footage of the skiers going on their fastest runs (which are some of the fastest runs in the world).  When watching the Olympics you obviously know they are going fast, but I feel like the camera work is a lot better on the documentary (most likely because it's not "live" like the Olympics).

Below is the entire documentary if you have an hour to spare...it's worth it.

Ode to a Bean Bag

Empty rooms are like blank canvases. cliché ? ...we'll see. There's vulnerable space to be taken advantage of. For an entire semester my room was pretty empty. I had a photograph collage that a friend gave to me for my 21st, it's cute and meaningful, but it's not Art  with a capitol "A" and not something I would chose to put on my wall. I'm not a big fan of those houses that are decorated wall to wall with Isaac Alongi "professional" family portraits. One is enough, you don't need to take a family portrait every year, and have individuals of every kid. A couple photographs framed here and there, in an artistic, well captured moment are good...but when it's overdone and collaged together...ew (no offense Dylan and Andy I love that gift).
For an entire semester I left my walls artless and my carpet bare. Keep in mind I live in a sorority house and share a 2x4 with my roomate Daisey, and not a piece of wood. (hah).  Actually, I'm not complaining. We were blessed with a new house this year and the rooms are rather large for a sorority house. About double the size of your average dorm room.
Literally, the week before thanksgiving break my mom took the liberty to send me a carpet! I chose a round 6' shag. I wanted it to be circular because I think they are more inviting that squares. Also, since our room is a square, it's always nice to fit a circle in a square (very pantheon-esk). People responded to the carpet. I started having regular visitors who wanted to come sit and play cards on my cozy rug. Not gonna lie, it's soft and reminds me of my Sheepdog Monty.
But the rug wasn't cutting it. On multiple occasions Kate would come in and chat and always comment, "There's not place to sit on your room but your bed... I feel awkward sitting on your bed". I would always kind of chuckle, but I knew that we needed something. I looked at bean bags online and those goofy "gamer chairs", but wasn't ready to purchase something without it being perfect. One evening I happened to wonder into Urban Outfitters and for the first time in my life a piece of furniture spoke to me. It yearned, "BRITTANY, BUY ME I AM THE BEAN BAG SENT DOWN FROM HEAVEN FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE OF MOLDING TO YOUR BUM". What did it look like? Why an original POLLOCK! I couldn't help but chuckle in class when Professor Allen showed us the digital pollock link. And you too can be an artistic genius!

Click Me!

What's ironic about this bean bag is it inspired a painting idea for me. No, I wasn't tempted to splatter paint on a canvas... been there, done that. But I thought a bean bag could be a great canvas! Especially for college students. So be on the lookout, I may be expanding my medium to canvas beanbags.

P.S. Check out the transformation of my room. Now everyone comes and hangs out, Pi Phi house Room 220, join the party!

Dog Portraits

This is Pablo (see above). A charcoal commission I whipped out today! I should have done it about 3 weeks ago...(typical artist) procrastination at my best!

A couple of years ago I did Matisse (see right), Pablo's older brother. Looking at the two they have the simlar style, but I feel like I captured more of the personality with Matisse. Part of it was from sketching out the dog in pencil first and emailing it to my client. She then told me what she wanted changed. Easy enough! I've learned that costomer value is important. I cater to what she wants and she calls me every time she gets a new pup!

I'm thinking about specializing in dog portraits. It has a lot of potential for the Dallas area.

Here is Bailey, I painting I did for my sister over winter break! (It was about oh...2 years overdue...OOPS!)

Nooka Ad

I told a buddy (at a cocktail party) that I would help him with an ad he was working on. We just met and realized we are in the same Ethics class and had TEMERLIN in common. He told me he was a copywriter... I, not "officially" knowing what my advertising calling is... told him my background as an art major and how I recently switched to advertising. I loved Art, the studio, the people and mostly the messes I got to make. What I didn't like was how subjective it was. Yes, we had assignments and sort of had criteria...but they would rip you apart in the critiques (but sometimes you just had to laugh at yourself and start over). I enjoy painting, drawing, woodwork, silversmithing, welding, ceramics and printmaking for the sake of capturing new ways of looking at things/the world and learning new techniques/skills. I guess you could say I like learning for the sake of learning...but I didn't feel there was much of a purpose for making Art for teachers and having them grade it. It seemed wrong. I could do "Art" on my own. I love waking up and going to all four of my advertising classes each week. I feel like advertising has more of a purpose than just "making art". It's selling, negotiating, tweaking, persuading, creating... times infinite.

Back to the Nooka ad. They didn't end up using my stuff which was fine, I was just glad to (attempt) to help out and get back into a studio like setting. How I miss the bursts of conversation that jump and play with creatives.

Why miss what's blinding? Start the conversation.

Mini Dubai TURNS ME ON

SMU= MINI DUBAI

WHY?

BECAUSE WE'RE BUILDING SO FREAKING FAST

HOWEVER, I DO ADMIT I HAVE A THING FOR CONSTRUCTION SITES...THEY TURN ME ON.

THEY ARE A CREATIVE PROCESS. CONSTANTLY CHANGING AND MOLDING AND SHAPING AND BUILDING.

YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE TURNS ME ON ABOUT CONSTRUCTION SITES? (YES, SOMETIMES THE WORKERS ARE SEXY...BUT I'M ATTRACTED TO THEIR HANDS. THEIR GLOVES. I WANT TO MAKE CERAMIC GLOVES FOR EACH CONSTRUCTION WORKER AT THE SITE, AND THEN BUILD A STATUE OF THE HANDS...THIS STATUE COULD BE AT EVERY SITE...LIKE A SIGNATURE.

WHY?

BECAUSE ALL YOU REMEMBER THE BUILDING FOR IS THE DONOR NAME (MCFARLIN, DEDMAN, ALTSCHULER).

PUT THE CONSTRUCTION WORKERS SIGNATURES ON THE BUILDINGS-THEY ARE THE TRUE ARTISANS!
